SOUTH SUDAN: Tombura-Yambio Bishop’s residence invaded

On Tuesday
night buglers invaded Tombura-Yambio Bishop’s residence and went away with
6,000 South Sudanese Pounds (equivalent to 1,000 USD).
According to
the Diocesan Chancellor, Fr. Diko Raphael, the burglars broke the main door of
the pastoral building and entered Humanitarian, Development and Peace Offices’ Store
and went away with at least South Sudanese 300 Pounds contributed by Nzara Parishioners
to support Maridi displaced persons.
Residences
of the Religious men or women and Catholic Church premises in South Sudan have
become targets for robbery incidences since the beginning of this year.
According to reports, the frequency of these crimes is of more than two
incidents per month.
On 9th
June 2015, at dawn, robbers broke in St Joseph Parish in Juba taking money,
computers and other belongs from offices, shops and a pharmacy. Second, on 18th
June, again at dawn, the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC) compound was
raided in Juba by armed buglars who were dressed in military uniform. SCBC lost
several items worth thousands of South Sudanese Pounds. These include seven
laptop computers and cash.
Meanwhile, a visiting Pontifical Foundation,
the Aid to Church in Need, says the strength of the Church makes a difference
in the future of South Sudan.
In an exclusive interview with CRN, Christine
du Coudray hails the commitment of the Catholic Church to meeting people’s
needs amidst many challenges.
She adds that Bishops and other Church personnel
are in full charge of the South Sudanese and that the Church’s capacity to
extend support to suffering people of South Sudan is vital for National building.
Mrs Coudray says proper care for Church
workers help in uniting them as a loving and caring family rendering better
services to communities.
She discloses that Aid to Church in Need is
planning to launch a communication campaign to sensitize Pontifical Foundation
supporters about the situation of South Sudan to raise funds to help the
church.
A team from the Pontifical Foundation visited
South Sudan Churches in Wau, Yambio, Rumbek and Torit to listen to expectations
of Local Churches.
