AMECEA: Justice and Peace Welcomes Pope’s Call for Climate Action

AMECEA Justice,
Peace and Caritas welcomes the new Encyclical ‘Laudato Si’ of the Holy
Father Pope Francis on ‘Care for Our Common Home’, which presents a beacon of
hope for a renewed earth.

Speaking to AMECEA Online News
the AMECEA Justice, Peace and Caritas Coordinator Mr. Antony Mbandi said that
the Encyclical calls for global and national action to protect the environment
and for a moral analysis of economic policy.

He said that Pope Francis’ vision is
not just Catholic, but global, Ecumenical and Interfaith. “We are all called upon to
read this Encyclical in three forms; first in faith, secondly as a citizen of a
country and thirdly and most importantly as a citizen of the earth,” he said
adding that “this is a call to be good stewards of what the Lord has placed
under our care.”

AMECEA Justice, Peace
and Caritas is in solidarity with the Holy Father in addressing this crucial
issue of our times. “The fact remains that the Church’s role must be
there as it was in the past, to consider issues of climate change from the viewpoint of entire humanity, in order
to provide a moral compass that motivates people everywhere to do the right
thing and think about how their choices are impacting on the poorest and most
vulnerable,” he said.

He said, “based on those principles we are called
upon by Pope Francis to put the poorest
at the center, the ones who are not responsible for the terrible
consequences of climate change on people’s lives and have less resources to
react.”

Mr. Mbandi told AMECEA
Online News
that he is planning for a platform to discuss the way forward
for the Encyclical after the feedback from the National Conferences of the
AMECEA region.
