UGANDA: Kiyinda Mityana Diocese chosen to lead 2016 Uganda Martyrs celebrations

The Catholic
Diocese of Kiyinda Mityana has been chosen to lead the 2016 Uganda Martyrs day
celebrations.
The
announcement was made at this year’s first plenary meeting of the Catholic
Bishops in Uganda that was held in Kampala from 4th to 11th
June, 2015. The Bishops’ Conference usually have two plenaries in a year, i.e. in June and September. The meeting usually gives the Bishops, who come from the 19
Catholic Dioceses country-wide, the chance to share time together and discuss
all aspects of the Catholic Church in Uganda.
The
Archbishop of Tororo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Obbo said that the ordinary plenary is
usually held twice a year in the months of June and November. “We always meet
in those months to discuss many things including issues of the conference among
other things,” Archbishop Obbo said shortly after the plenary ended.
During the
week-long convention, the bishops also evaluated the just concluded 2015 Uganda
Martyrs celebration that was led by the Diocese of Lira on June 3rd at
Namugongo Shrines.
At the end
of the plenary, the Archbishop of Gulu who is also Chairman of the Uganda
Episcopal Conference, Most Rev. John Baptists Odama issued a message of good
will to the Muslims to wish them a happy Ramadhan.
The Apostolic
Nuncio to Uganda, H.E Michael August Blume and His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal
Wamala also attended the plenary meeting.
The Diocese
of Kiyinda–Mityana is found in Kampala Ecclesiastical Province and presently
comprises of 25 parishes. The first bishop was Bishop Emmanuel Wamala, now His
Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala, who was consecrated a Bishop on the same day
of the inauguration of the Diocese on November 22, 1988.
On September
10, 1988, Bishop Wamala was appointed Co-adjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese
of Kampala and was replaced by Bishop Joseph Mukwaya who was auxiliary Bishop
of Kampala Archdiocese. Bishop Mukwaya received a co-Adjutor Bishop, Msgr.
Joseph Antony Zziwa who was consecrated a Bishop on March 16, 2002. Bishop
Zziwa was appointed as Ordinary of the Diocese becoming the third Bishop of
Kiyinda-Mityana on October 23, 2004. Bishop Mukwaya died in 2008.
