TANZANIA: Catholic Church Rewards A Former ‘Slaves Town’ with A University College of Science and Technology

The Vice President
of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Garib Bilal, has commended the
establishment of the University College of Marian-Bagamayo (MARUCO) as a
positive revolution in the country during inauguration ceremony on 31st
May 2015.
“I would
like to thank all partners for the idea and facilitation of the whole process
that led to establishment of the university,” Dr Bilal was quoted as saying.
The new university
college will be under the administration of Spiritans Fathers (CSSp).
According to Dr.
Bilal, the establishment of the university goes hand in hand with Government
policy which emphasizes the provision of many experts in the fields of science
and technology which is also classified in the ‘Tanzania Vision 2025’.
“To achieve
the economic transformation of the country, the education sector is a catalyst
for change would be expected to be generated by the preparation of human
resources in various fields. So the government in collaboration with various
stakeholders of the education sector will continue to improve the teaching and
learning environment in order to provide a better educational that prepares Tanzanians
for employment in the public sector and the private sector “explained Dr.
Bilal.
Bishop of
Morogoro diocese, where the university is located, said that it is the
expectation of everybody that the college will produce good students who will use
their education for serving people with integrity and not be corrupt and
selfish leaders.
Speaking at the
same event, the Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam, H.E. Polycarp Cardinal Pengo commended
the good relationship that exists between the government and the Catholic
Church in the country.
He said that the
success of the Church in providing various social services including education
stem from the government’s readiness to provide cooperation and create
conducive environments for operation and investment. “I would like to
thank the government for supporting the efforts of the Church to provide
various services to the community, and in a special way I congratulate Dr.
Bilal for your willingness to join us today we launched our campus.
The Vice
Chancellor of SAUT Very Rev Dr Thadeus Mkamwa said that the idea of establishing
MARUCO was designed to support the government in its commitment of providing quality
education for its citizens. He said that Marian University College intends to
offer a wide range of courses especially in science subjects as its
contribution in the solving of the various challenges that require more
professional capacity in the fields of science and technology.
