Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya

The
Government of Kenya has commended the role played by the Catholic Church in
Education and Health Sectors in the Country.
According to
the statement from President Uhuru Kenyata read by Hon. Senator Beatrice Elachi
during the reception to mark the second Anniversary of the election of Pope Francis
to the papacy at the residence of the Apostolic Nuncio on 13th March
2015, the Catholic Dioceses in Kenya are actively engaging themselves in the
social ministry, through various programmes especially in the education and
health sectors.
“It is also
worth noting that the Catholic Church is the largest non-state provider of
health care services in Kenya. It has an expansive network which consists of
close to 500 healthcare units and over 50 Community Based Orphanages and
Vulnerable Children Programs,” read the statement adding that “The church works
hand in hand with the government to provide affordable services to millions of
Kenyans, especially in the rural areas.”
Giving the
statistics of the Catholic population to be 30 percent, government acknowledged
that the history of education in Kenya is attributed to the missionaries who
not only set up schools but also ensured that quality services were provided.
“Currently
the Church has over 8,000 Primary and Secondary schools, five colleges, a fully-fledged
University and also provides facilities for people with special needs,” read
the statement adding that “We applaud the exemplary work done by the Church
particularly in the health and education sectors in this country. These
programs and other noble initiatives have indeed gone a long way in improving
the quality of life of the People of Kenya and the socio economic development of
the country.”
