KENYA: Diocese of Kakamega to Get New Bishop on Saturday

The Catholic
Diocese of Kakamega will on Saturday 7th March get a new Bishop
after the ordination of Bishop Elect Rt. Rev. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe that will
take place at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega County.
Bishop
Obanyi will be the second Bishop of the Diocese which was erected on 27th
February 1978, taking over from Bishop Philip Sulumeti who retired in December
2014 in accordance with canon 401 Article 1 of the Code of Canon Law.
Some
delegates from AMECEA Secretariat will join Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo, AMECEA
Secretary General who comes from the diocese to the celebration that will also
be attended by some government dignitaries.
The
Bishop-elect was born in 1967 at Kebiro, in the Diocese of Kisii. He was
ordained a priest for the Diocese of Kisii on 25th October 1996.
After his ordination, he served as Parish Vicar and diocesan Coordinator for
Pastoral Care between 1996 and 1999.
Between 1999
and 2004 he was a student at the Pontifical Lateran University. Upon his return
in 2004, he became the Parish priest at Kisii Cathedral and in 2005 as well as
the Vicar General for the Diocese of Kisii.
