MALAWI: The Country Hit by Floods; Relief Aid is Urgently Needed

Floods and human disaster have
been reported in Malawi following heavy rains which lasted for two weeks.
Reports said most of the
affected areas are the central and southern part of the country which include
Balaka, Blantyre, Zomba and Chikwawa.

Some people were confirmed dead
while a number of families left homeless after their houses were swept away by
water.

President Peter Mutharika has
declared Malawi a State of disaster following the floods that claimed the lives
of citizen and some families rendered homeless.

He described the floods as
national tragedy that urgently needs both local and international response.

President Mutharika made a call
for the assistance of civil society, private sector and all well-wishers as
well as donor agencies and UN arms to help in alleviating the suffering of
Malawians.

Relief and emergency department
of ECM sent its officers to the affected areas to evaluate the magnitude of the
problem in view of helping the victims.
