The
Ethiopian Catholic University of St Thomas Aquinas (ECUSTA) will start offering Peace Building courses to promote regional stability in AMECEA region.
According
to Fr. Hagos Hayish, the Secretary General of Ethiopian Conference of Catholic
Bishops (ECBC), ECUSTA was established with the request of the Late Prime Meles
Zenawi to the then Pope St. John Paul II during his visit to the Holy See.
“ECUSTA is engaging itself in offering Peace
building programs to help Eastern African communities manage conflicts in a
Christian socio-ethical manner,” he said.
“As pioneers in the field of education in
Ethiopia, a lot is expected from ECUSTA and we are inspired to be part of the
Catholic University family of Eastern Africa (CUEA) for mutual benefits and regional
development.”
“The
peace building courses will supplement those already being offered in the field
of social work, medical laboratories and IT in two campuses,” he said during the
ongoing AMECEA plenary in Malawi.
He
added that the government recognizes the invaluable contribution of the Church
to education in the country and has donated 60 hectares of land for the
expansion and of the university.
The
Catholic Church in Ethiopia founded the oldest University in that country,
Addis Ababa University, which is now the biggest higher learning institution.
