TANZANIA: The Catholic Church Establishes another University at Bagamoyo

for the new university at Bagamoyo

The Catholic
Church in Tanzania through the Spiritans Fathers Congregation that runs
Marian boys and girls secondary schools in Bagamoyo, Morogoro Diocese, is planning to start a 
University College which goes under the name of Marian University College (MUCO)  with
an intention of producing science professionals in the country.

The foundation stone of the University was laid by the Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam H.E. Polycarp Cardinal Pengo which signified the beginning of the University whereby the first enrollment of student is expected to begin in September this year amid completion of the   buildings.
 
During the foundation stone laying ceremony, Cardinal Pengo said that a nation that does not have experts in science cannot be in the same scale of competitions to development with other nations, thus  it will be lagging behind. 

Speaking at the event, the Vice Superior of the congregation  Rev
Fr. Florentin Malya has explained that the college will operate said that MUCO which is located in Bagamoyo, will operate as a branch of
St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT) until when all the due processes of
making it a fully fledged independent University are accomplished.

He also
said that the motive behind establishing MUCO is in response to the government ‘s  call to private learning institutions to develop science
professionals in order to contribute to the handling of various scientific challenges of
the country.
“This
is a continuation of the academic courses offered at the Marian School where
both boys and girls have continued to excel academically,” he said.
“Some
parents have been struggling to find places to send their children when they
finish their studies with excellent academic foundation from,” explained
Father Malya adding that “It is for this reason that the leadership of the Congregation has asked the government to cooperate with them in their efforts to
improve education in the country by starting this university college.”
“Our aim is to provide a quality education that will ensure that many young people get better education from this University,” he said adding that “As a
religious congregation and the Church as a whole, we have shown good collaboration
with the government to establish the Marian school for girls and boys that have
been providing the best education for students; the ball is now on
the government’s side to do the same by supporting us in order to establish
credible learning institutions for future generation.” 
 
He also asked
parents to continue supporting them since it is through such collaboration that
the congregation can realize the dream of establishing the university.
