MALAWI: AMECEA Joins Election Monitoring Groups for Malawi Election

Fr. Jude Waweru

As Malawi goes for general election
on 20th May 2014, AMECEA Justice and Peace
will participate in election observation and monitoring together with Malawi
and Zambia Conferences.
Speaking with AMECEA Online News, Fr. Jude Waweru who is the coordinator of
AMECEA Justice and Peace Desk said he will be traveling to Malawi on Monday 19th to join
his Justice and Peace counterparts in order to carry out the exercise.
Fr. Jude explained that the second
synod of Bishops of Africa appealed to the Church to be present in the
political governance of their countries and one such important activity is the
General Elections that determine the leadership of that particular country.
Therefore at the Regional level, AMECEA has always made an effort to be present
in the general elections of their member countries to observe and monitor
elections in order to be fully informed of the processes but more so to ensure
that the electoral process is free and fair.
He said that the Church must be fully
aware and informed of how the general election are conducted so that she may be
able to intervene and arbitrate positively in case of disputes.
Fr. Jude and the team he is joining
in Malawi will stay there for a period of one week, if hopefully the process
goes on well without hitches, in order to have a conclusive report on the
voting, tallying, announcement and management of the results.
Fr. Jude said that he has had
constant communications with the CCJP Malawi in order to keep a tab on how the
Catholic Church in Malawi is involved in the preparations for the general
election. “The CCJP Malawi has put in place structures rolling out to the
entire country of having a representation that will follow the results as they
are announced by the presiding officers in all polling stations and they will
be relaying the same results to the central parallel tallying centre by CCJP at
the Catholic secretariat,” he said.
“This will help the Church to compare
the officially announced results by the electoral commission with what the
presiding officers had announced,” he said adding that “In this
regard, the Church will be able to resolve any arising tallying disputes from
an informed platform.”
“The experience of Election
observation and monitoring by the Church helps in carrying out the same
exercise in other countries of AMECEA,” Fr. Jude
Fr. Jude was in Malawi five years ago
to carry out the same exercise in 2009 when the country had its general
election. He said that the whole process was very peaceful and a wonderful
experience for him, after having witnessed a nasty electoral disputes followed
by post election violence in Kenya in 2007-2008.
AMECEA Justice and Peace is
requesting all to pray for Malawians so that they may uphold a peaceful
election.
