UGANDA: UEC postpones the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Uganda Martyrs

Episcopal Conference (UEC) has postponed the celebration of the Golden Jubilee
of the canonization of the Uganda Martyrs until further notice.
A press
statement issued on March 14, 2014 and signed by Most Rev John Baptist Odama,
the Archbishop of Gulu and the Chairman of Uganda Conference said, the Golden
Jubilee celebrations were scheduled for 18th October 2014 and that
Pope Francis was invited to preside over the celebrations. However, due to
prior commitments, he is unable to visit Uganda this year.
“On
September, 2013, we sent an invitation to his Holiness the Pope Francis to
visit Uganda and preside over the Golden Jubilee celebration of the
canonization of the Uganda Martyrs, scheduled for October, 18, 2014,” the
statement said.
“We have,
therefore, decided to postpone the national celebrations of the Golden Jubilee
of the canonization of our Martyrs until further notice. We hope and pray that
the Pope’s schedule allows him to visit us in the near future.”
Meanwhile,
Archbishop Odama has announced that this year’s (2014) celebrations of Uganda
Martyrs Day, will be celebrated as usual on the 3rdof
June and the Diocese of Kotido will animate the celebrations.
