SOUTH SUDAN: AMECEA is Deeply Concerned with What is Going-On in the Country

AMECEA is deeply concerned
about the deteriorating security situation in South Sudan, arising from the
recent problems in the country.
In a solidarity message sent to SCBC Secretary General Fr Jacob Odwa Paul the AMECEA Secretary General Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo said On behalf of AMECEA Chairman Archbishop Tarcisius Ziyaye, Archbishop of Lilongwe, Malawi said AMECEA is saddened by the situation in South Sudan and is hoping that the situation will be resolved soon to avoid more suffering and that peace will prevail and that AMECEA is offering Prayers for that.

A letter emailed from Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (SCBC) Secretary General Fr. Jacob Odwa Paul on Monday 16th to AMECEA Secretary General Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo and
Secretaries General in AMECEA Conferences, stated that many soldiers and civilians
were wounded and were being treated at Juba Teaching hospital. Fr Odwa asked for prayers to the people of South Sudan.

explained that people have moved to the interior of Juba for fear of the worse.
Many were suffering of thirsty and hungry because the situation came as a
surprise. “There is no work in Juba; restaurants, bars, market, transport,
shops, and Juba Bridge are all closed,” he said.

According to reports from the Catholic Radio
Network, CRN, the Juba unrest have left over 40 dead, 170 injured while over the United Nation Mission in South Sudan UNMISS
is hosting six thousand displaced people in its Tomping compound and another
seven thousand in its Jebel Kujuk compound.

But, reports give conflicting figures with the number of deaths, casualties and displacement people that have happened so far. Generally speaking the situation in South Sudan is worse as the violence have also escalated in other towns of South Sudan.
