KENYA: Lodwar Diocese Launches Food Security Master Plan

The
Catholic Diocese of Lodwar has launched Food security Master plan for Turkana County
at St. Teresa Pastoral Center on 25th July 2013 which aimed at enhancing food security program in the Turkana County.

Speaking
during the launching the Bishop of Lodwar Diocese Rt. Rev Dominic Kimengich said
the drought of 2011 which caused the massive destruction of lives of many
people in Turkana community awakened them to come up with different ideas which
will help deal with poverty in the county.

He
also revealed that the Diocese has received funds from the Government of Ireland
through Irish Aid to implement the programme of food security in order to
eradicate famine in the county. However Bishop urged the county government to
join hands together with the Diocese and other stakeholders in the
implementation of the program.

Meanwhile,
Turkana County Deputy Governor Peter Ekai who was also present during the
launch said that the county government has allocated funds for agriculture and
promised to unite with the Diocese and stakeholders to make sure that the
county does not depend on aid but also supply food to other Counties.

function was also attended by Baringo Minister of Industrialization, trade and
tourism Keitany Kipchumba and Minister of Water and Irrigation Job Tomno,
representatives from different Non Governmental Organizations, Priests from
various Parishes within the Diocese and many other stakeholders working in
Turkana.
