ZANZIBAR: Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF)

The 16th Zanzibar
International Film Festival ZIFF was held on 29th June-7th
July 2013. The theme for this year’s Festival of the Dhow Countries was dubbed A
Shared History. According to Prof. Martin Muhando, the CEO and Festival
Director, more than 35 film directors with films in the competition confirmed
their presence. 

The Awards included
four international juries namely the ZIFF
Jury Awards which award Golden Dhow to the Best Feature Film, SIGNIS Jury Award (World
Catholic Association for Communication), the Sembene Award, Jury for the Ousmane Sembene Films for
Development Award, The Verona Jury Award which is awarded to the Best East African Feature Film and the
ZUKU Jury Award for the best
film created by African Directors, in African Location and with African Actors
and Actresses. 
The SIGNIS Jury Awards
are presented annually by SIGNIS, the Roman Catholic lay movement for
communication media professionals, to recognize excellence of professionals in
the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. According to Mr.
Jos Horemans, SIGNIS President, Europe, SIGNIS has been collaborating with the
ZIFF organizers for nine years and will continue to do so for as long as it
will be possible. “As SIGNIS Jury, first we give the SIGNIS Award, to either
short or long film, or documentary which is not only well produced in terms of
technicalities but also whose contents have both Christian and Human Values,”
he said. The second award from SIGNIS is for Eastern Africa Talent Award, where
excellent upcoming films makers from East African Countries namely Kenya,
Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi are considered. Third award by SIGNIS is a
commendation to a well produced film whose content promotes human values.
Basically when it comes
to technicalities, the SIGNIS Jury pay attention to directing, editing, musical
scoring, camerawork and lighting. For this year’s award, eighty films out of
250 films which were submitted were selected to contest and the jury had a
hectic task of watching all the eighty films in order to come up with the best.
The SIGNIS Award was
given to Ni Sisi, a film from Kenya Directed by Nick Reding. The East African
Talent Award was given to Kivuto, a film from Rwanda directed by Poupoune
Sesonga while the Commendation of the Jury was given to the Little One, a film
from South Africa directed by Darrell Roodt.
The members of the
SIGNIS Juries were designated by the organization. They include persons
qualified in the field of film, television reviews, often journalists or people
who work in the field of cinema or television. They were Mr. Jos Horemans from
Belgium who has been president of SIGNIS Europe since June 2005; Mrs. Pamela
Adinda Makori from Kenya, a journalist who works at AMECEA Social
Communications Department; Fr. Walter Chikwendu from Nigeria, a Senior Lecturer
in Communication Studies and Head of Department of Linguistics and
Communication Studies at the Federal University of Port Harcourt, River State
Nigeria and Mr. Guido Huysmans from Belgium who is the director of Afrika
Filmfestival.
