ZAMBIA: ZEC Advocates for a Good Constitution

The Secretary General of the Zambia
Episcopal Conference (ZEC), Fr. Cleophas Lungu has called the Civil Society
Organizations promoting good governance to work together tirelessly to advocate
for a people driven constitution for the Republic of Zambia.

Rev Fr Cleophas Lungu -Secretary General ZEC
Fr. Lungu was addressing members
of the Civil Society Organizations that were gathered in Chisamba, at Protea
Hotel, to discuss issues under the theme: Promoting Good Governance in Zambia.  Fr. Lungu appealed to all participants to be the
champions of Good Governance in Zambia.

He said that a good
constitution is the key prerequisite for national unity, development, justice
and freedom for all citizens of the Land.
“We see the constitution as a prerequisite for development and a good constitution for Zambia was a must,”
he said.

He urged the members of civic
societies and the public at large to remain vigilant and alert during the constitution
making process. The history and experience in Zambia has shown that the
citizens cannot entrust the whole process when it is put in the hands of the
politician alone.

“Remember, all it takes for bad things to happen is for good
people to remain silent,” he  said, while adding that “All of us in this room are good
people and we mean well for this country; I truly believe that Every human
being must always aspire to inspire before one expires.”

The Civil Society Organizations
are also planning a series of advocacy actions to undertake in the event that
the country goes to a referendum after June 30 when the technical committee is
supposed to release the draft constitution.

The CSOs meeting include the
following: Foundation for Democratic Process (FODEP), Young African Leaders
Initiative (YALI), the Oasis Forum, MISA, Panos, SACCORD, ZaCoMeF, WFC, WILSA
and several youth organizations.
