SOUTH SUDAN: SCBC mourns the death of Bishop Vincent Mojwok Nyiker, Emeritus Bishop of Malakal

Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference is mourning the death of Rt. Rev. Vincent Mojwok Nyiker, Bishop Emeritus of the Catholic Diocese of Malakal who passed away in Khartoum, Sudan on 5th, January, 2018.

In the statement issued by the President of Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC) Rt. Rev. Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala, the Bishops were deeply saddened by the death of Bishop Vincent Majok.

“I extend my sincere condolences to you, and to the clergy, religious, SCBC and lay faithful of the diocese of Malakal. Joining with you in expressing profound gratitude for the late Bishop’s untiring and devoted service to the Church, and for his constant advocacy for dialogue and peace for all the people in Upper Nile, Malakal and whole South Sudan,” read the statement.

The late Bishop Vincent Mojwok Nyiker who died aged 84 after a long ailment was born in 1933 in town of Tunja, Southern Shilluk area, Upper Nile. He was ordained priest in 1963 together with Cardinal Gabriel Zubeir Wako of Khartoum and Archbishop Paolino Lukudu Loro of Juba.

The body of Bishop Vincent Mojwok arrived in Juba from Khartoum on Tuesday, January 9 and Requiem Mass held at 3 PM the same day at St Theresa Cathedral Juba. It was then flown to Malakal on Wednesday, January 10 and buried on Thursday January 11.

Bishop Mojwok was appointed by Pope John Paul II on 15th, March, 1979 and consecrated a Bishop in Rome on 27th, May, 1979. He retired on 16th, May, 2009.

Among religious leaders who mourned Rt. Rev. Mojwok Nyiker is Sheikh Juma Saeed Ali who is also a Presidential Advisor on Islamic Affairs. Sheikh Saeed testifies that the late Bishop, who died when religious leaders are seeking for tranquility in the country, was one of the peacemakers who worked towards unity of the people of South Sudan.

Sheikh Saeed was the one who facilitated the transportation of the body of the late Catholic Bishop from Khartoum to Juba and then Malakal.

The Apostolic Administrator of the catholic Diocese of Malakal Monsignor Roko Taban Musa says Bishop Vincent Mojwok Nyiker died of heart failure and kidney problem.
