MALAWI: Catholic women Continue to restore nature

In a move to restore nature, Catholic Women Organization (CWO) in the Archdiocese of Blantyre have increased efforts to plant more trees during the 2017/18 tree planting season.

Speaking at the launch of the tree planting season at Limbe Cathedral in Blantyre on Saturday, Chairlady for CWO, in the Archdiocese Lucy Khoviwa said the women were concerned with the degradation of the environment hence the action.

“Women have been greatly affected by the degradation of the environment, women are walking long distance to look for firewood in our rural areas, the same applies in our towns where women are standing for long hours waiting for charcoal sellers” said Khoviwa.

She added that the organization will ensure high survival rate for the trees that are to be planted in parishes of the Archdiocese.

“We planted trees in all the parishes last year but the survival rate has not been impressive. This year, we are to make sure that the survival rate is high” she added.

The chairlady added that, CWO is to work together with parish councils to establish committees that are to be responsible for the survival of the trees.

Vicar General for the Archdiocese Father Boniface Tamani, who graced the ceremony, commended the women for the effort to restore nature that once lived.

“With the power of restoring, we must make sure that the mind of man is in line with the mind of God by protecting the environment and recreating the World, so it is our responsibility” said Tamani.

National Bank Head of Business Process Management Brian Boby assured of the continued support to the women in the Archdiocese to plant more trees during the five year period.

Boby added that, the bank is concerned with the degradation of the environment hence the decision to partner with the women in the Archdiocese to plant trees in the “Go Green” campaign.
