UGANDA: AMECEA Launches Financial Management workshop for Regional Bishops

The Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA) organized an inaugural workshop on Executive Financial Management for the Catholic Bishops in Uganda. The workshop was held from March 7-11, 2017 at St. Augustine Institute in Kampala Archdiocese.

The workshop sought to equip the Ugandan Bishops with the knowledge and skills in Financial Management. It was organized by AMECEA in collaboration with the Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) and Missio – Aachen.

Addressing the participants, the AMECEA Secretary General, Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo, said that the training followed a survey conducted by one of its partners, Missio- Aachen which identified the need for improved financial management and sustainability in Catholic institutions in the AMECEA region.

“The Catholic Church has a lot of institutions that need proper financial management if they are to be sustainable. It is in this interest that we need to train all those involved in the management of our institutions,” he said that there are plans to hold similar workshops for the prelates in all the countries in the AMECEA region to equip them with knowledge in putting up structures and systems to ensure sustainability.

The five-day training equipped the prelates with tips on how to plan sound capital structures, how to ensure safety on investments and optimum funds utilization within the Church. It attracted a total of 19 bishops from the 19 dioceses across Uganda.

Fr. Lugonzo also said that they chose the Bishops as their first target group for the training, because they have bigger responsibilities in their dioceses and they are the administrators of all the Catholic Church institutions in their respective dioceses.

Some of the topics that were discussed included Spirit and Mission of AMECEA, Church Administration, Project Planning and Management, Mobilization of Resources, Financial Management and Business Ethics.
