TANZANIA: ‘Avoid Destructive Activities to the Environment’ – Bishops Call

The Catholic Bishops in the country have asked the society to avoid all activities that lead to the destruction of the environment regardless of the nature of profit one can get out of it.

In their Lenten message with the Theme: ‘The joy of the Gospel and Creation” the Bishops have asked the Catholic Faithful and the society at large to make a U- Turn and respect all that God created and make take environmental conservation issue as a priority.

untitledThe Bishops said, “Man was created, was placed by the Creator to be the leader of His creative work, he is entrusted the responsibility to subdue the earth and over the creation (Gen. 1:28) unfortunately, the same Man has become a destructor of environment on pretense of searching for basic necessities for livelihood.

They said that man was expected to manage ethically God’s creation and use nature according to the will of the Creator for his needs; instead greedy and selfishness has made him look for temporal happiness.

“Our first parents missed the treasure of paradise and friendship with God. The same things are happening today, we lose the precious treasure of creation. Our pursuit of wealth has led us to the destruction of the environment. The result is not limited only to fellow humans, but to other dashing organism’s environment as well,” read the statement.

They asked the individuals, local communities, and even the international community to correct and take action. “Human search for basic needs in no way can justify the destruction of the environment,” they said in the statement.
