The people in the diocese of Maralal mostly the Samburu, Turkana, Pokot and other minority tribes remain underdeveloped due to ignorance and isolation as they have not mingled with the rest of Kenyans.

Speaking at Waumini House on 27th, February 2017, during the launch of Caritas Maralal’s five years strategic plan 2016-2020, the Bishop of Maralal Rt. Rev. Virgilio Pante said the strategic plan dubbed “The New Dawn”, is aimed at bringing transformation of empowerment to the people of Maralal.

Bishop Pante said that the document is a reference point for the design and implementation of caritas activities that are in line with the activities of the diocese, with interventions guided by the five strategic pillars.

“The pillars include; Health and Nutrition, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction (CMDRR) and Climate Change, Peace and Justice, Sustainable Livelihoods and Education. Gender and HIV/AIDS and Capacity Building.” He said

He however called on political leaders to refrain from using language that divide Kenyans along tribal lines as this triggers conflict saying that, “sometimes leaders are part of the problem and do not provide solutions to the people.” He emphasized that the church must therefore have the prophetic voice of uniting Kenyans.

Speaking at the same time, the President of Caritas Kenya and the Archbishop of Mombasa Most Rev. Martin Kivuva added that, the leaders and the people who work in church are called to be peace builders and therefore should work towards promotion of peace.
