Zambia Conference of Catholic Bishops (ZCCB) National Health Coordinator has confirmed the development but stated that works to reconstruct the burnt nursing school have not yet started. “Works on the burnt Chilonga School of nursing have not yet started because we are still looking for resources. But I must mention that government has replaced the medical equipment that were destroyed in that fire,” she said.

Chilonga School of Nursing in the Catholic Diocese of Mpika was gutted by fire destroying the entire infrastructure and students’ property.

Fire started from the Kitchen and later spread to the other structures of the Nursing School around 04:30 hours on 1st October, 2016.

Out of the 146 students at the school, 67 had their property destroyed but no one was injured nor any life lost.

DSC03875In another development, the ZCCB’s National Health Coordinator has disclosed that the construction of Lumezi School of Nursing in the Catholic Diocese of Chipata has advanced and since commended the local community for owning the project.

She appealed for more help in making sure that the nursing school is opened to the community within the stipulated time saying, “Though we have advanced, the pace is slow. We therefore appeal for financial and material support from the business community, lay people and just everyone because when the school is opened it shall belong to the community not the Catholic Church.”

The Catholic Church in Zambia currently operates nursing schools in Mpika, Mansa, Lusaka and Monze dioceses.
