SOUTH SUDAN: Catholic Diocese of Yei turns 30

The Catholic Faithful of Yei together with their bishop celebrated thirty years of service since the establishment of the diocese in 1986.

During the thanksgiving mass on Sunday, celebrated at Christ the King Cathedral, Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe said the diocese and its clergy served the people of God throughout liberation war,

The Governor of Yei River State David Lokonga Moses congratulated the diocese and bishop for the service. Local and state government officials attended the celebration. Yei Catholic Diocese comprises Yei River and Amadi States.

Pope John Paul II on March 21, 1986, separated Yei from Rumbek Diocese and appointed the current Bishop Erkolano its first spiritual leader. He was consecrated on November 28, 1986in Nairobi, Kenya.

Meanwhile the diocese on Sunday 27th November, also launched a peace initiative called “Youth united for peace” with the motto: ‘Together we develop’.

According to Radio Easter, the initiative intends to hold capacity building and public rallies on peace, advocacy and pastoral activities including prayers, retreat, conferences, games and sports.

Speaking at the launch, Bishop Erkolano called on South Sudanese to work for a lasting peace through dialogue. He appealed for respect for diversity of tribes, unity and love for one another while at the same time encouraging the peace initiative and leaders at all levels to be courageous in working for harmony.
