ERITREA: Bishop Emeritus of Asmara dies.

Rt. Rev. Zecharias Yohannes, Bishop Emeritus of Asmara died peacefully in the morning of December 1st in Asmara. According to information sent to AMECEA Secretary General Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Lugonzo by the Archbishop of Asmara Most Rev. Menghesteab Tesfamariam, MCCJ, the late Bishop Zecharias will be buried on Saturday, December 3rd.

The Late Bishop Zekarias was Born in May 1925 in Adigenu and was ordained a Priest of Asmara Diocese in June 1949. He was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Asmara on 29th January, 1981 and later on appointed Bishop of Asmara in July 1984. He retired as Bishop of Asmara upon reaching the retirement age on 25th June 2001.

AMECEA Secretary General Fr Ferdinand Lugonzo said that AMECEA Secretariat have received the sad news of the death of Bishop Zecharias Yohannes, Bishop Emeritus of Asmara with deep sorrow.

“While accepting God’s will in this painful event, we take this occasion to thank Almighty God for the gift of Bishop Zecharias to the Church in Eritrea. “On behalf of all the AMECEA Bishops and the Secretariat Staff, I send our condolences to the Family of God in the Archdiocese of Asmara where the late Bishop served. I also send condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Bishop Zecharias. May Almighty God grant us all a strong faith so that we may accept the death of our beloved Bishop in faith,” Fr. Lugonzo said.
