UGANDA: Archdiocese of Kampala celebrates the Golden Jubilee of the Canonization of the Uganda Martyrs
The
Archdiocese of Kampala celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Canonization of the
Uganda Martyrs on Saturday 18th October, 2014 at Sacred Heart Cathedral –
Lubaga. The Main Celebrant was His Excellency Michael August Blume – the
Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda flanked by His Eminence Emmanuel Cardinal Wamala,
His Grace Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Rt. Rev. Christopher Kakooza, and various
priests.

Bishops in the world were present in the Vatican for the Second Vatican
Councilon Sunday 18th October 1964.

The Uganda
Martyrs were Christian converts – 23Anglican and 22 Catholics, who were
murdered for their faith by the King of Buganda between 1885 and 1887, after
they refused to offer sacrifices to traditional gods.

After the
colorful celebration of the Canonization of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda, Pope
Paul V1 visited Uganda in 1969. He was the first Pope to make a pilgrimage to
the shrine at Namugongo, where he laid a foundation stone for the present minor
Basilica at the spot where St. Charles Lwanga was killed
and upon his return to Rome; he decreed that a Parish be established in honor
of the Holy Martyrs of Uganda.

the Ecclesiastical Province of Guluon 20thOctober, 2014 celebrated
the canonization of two Catechist Martyrs DaudiOkello and JildoIrwa at Paimolo
in a Mass that was also led by His Excellency Michael August Blume.
