SOUTH SUDAN: Diocese of Malakal is Paying the Price of Violence

Msgr Roko Taban
The Diocese
of Malakal (Upper Nile in the capital of South Sudan) has been completely
destroyed because of the fighting between the two rival factions of the SPLM
(Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, the ruling party) and thus calls for
humanitarian Aid and re-building strategies.

According to
information received from Msgr. Roko Taban Musa, the Apostolic Administrator of
the diocese of Malakal, who was in Juba recently to attend the Bishops
extraordinary plenary, the facilities built in eight years of sacrifice in the
States of Upper Nile, Unità and Jonglei have been destroyed.

Monsignor
Roko attributed destruction to the ‘power hungry’ leaders on whom he wanted
them to learn from it. He called all the faithful to pray for the diocese of
Malakal.

Monsignor
Taban urged South Sudanese to unite and avoid the example of belonging to
Apollo, Cyprus, Paul and Jesus. The Apostolic Administrator called on
Christians to change from the ideologies of war and conflicts into Peace and
Love.

Houses known as Tukuls
Report from
other sources said that about 210 houses famously known “tukuls” burned to the
ground in one of the city’s quarters and neighborhoods reduced to ashes.

Despite the
ceasefire signed on 23 January in Addis Ababa, the UN Mission in South Sudan
continues to record sporadic fighting in the Upper Nile and Jonglei State. Both
sides accuse each other of violating the truce and crimes against civilians.

Malakal is a
multi-ethnic city, housing Shilluk, Nuer, Dinka, Bari and many others, has been
the location of recent violence, with reports that much of it has been across
ethnic lines. Nearly 25,000 people are sheltered in the U.N. compound in the
northern part of town.
