SUDAN: Bishop Macram Max Gassis of the Diocese of El Obeid Retires

The
Holy Father Pope Francis on 28th October, 2013, accepted the resignation
from the pastoral care of the diocese of El Obeid, Sudan, presented by Bishop
Macram Max Gassis, MCCJ Bishop of El Obeid, Sudan upon having reached the age
limit.

Information
received from Vatican News Service (VIS) said Bishop Macram Max Gassis is succeeded
by Coadjutor Bishop Michael Didi Adgum Mangoria
Bishop
Macram was born on 21 September 1938 and ordained a priest on 28th June 1964.
He was appointed an Apostolic Administrator of El Obeid, Sudan on 4th
October1983 and later on was appointed Bishop of El Obeid on12 March 1988.
The
diocese of El Obeid is located in Sudan under the ecclesiastical province of
Khartoum. Darfur, Nuba Mountains, Blue Nile and Abyei, which are all
experiencing turmoil in Sudan fall under the diocese of El Obeid.
In
a telephone interview with Catholic Radio Network (CRN) Bishop
Didi said that his appointment is a challenge as he is heading one of the biggest
dioceses of the world and the war was making his movements difficult. But he
will try to do his best while expectingthat peace will come to his region.
Bishop
Didi said that his plan was always to see how the people of the diocese could
grow together.
