South Sudan: Clergies take part in the Celebration of Martyrs Day

Clergies and Faithful in South
Sudan on July 30th joined thousands of people in all major cities
across the country, as well as amongst the South Sudanese communities in the
Diaspora, to celebrate South Sudan Martyrs Day.
In Juba people lighted candles in
the living memory of the martyrs to pay tribute to the people who lost their
lives fighting for the independence of their country South Sudan.
At Yambio Freedom Square the
Catholic Bishop of Tombura Yambio Rt. Rev Edwardo Hiiboro Kussala said Martyrs
Day reminds the people of South Sudan about God’s plan for their nation and thus
think on how they can implement peace and love among communities.He appealed
for strong commitment, hard work and peaceful co-existence among South
Sudanese.
Bishop Hiiboro urged people of
Western Equatorial and South Sudan to pray for the martyrs and make good use of
the peace gained through bloodshed.
The Bishop encouraged citizens to
contribute for the legacy of the people who died for the sake of
independence.He asked the state authorities to allocate a special place and put
a symbol for paying tribute to the martyrs.
The July 30thof every
year South Sudan celebrates Martyrs Day in memory of the Sudan People’s
Liberation Movement (SPLM) founder, John Garang de Mabior, who died in a
helicopter crash as he returned to South Sudan from Uganda on 30th
July 2005.The day has been dubbed Martyrs’ Day to commemorate and to celebrate
the selfless sacrifices of the heroes and heroines of liberation who paid the
ultimate price for the liberation of the new country.
