SOUTH SUDAN: Govt acknowledges Church’s Role in South Sudan’s Independence

A cabinet Minister in the Government of Lakes
State in South Sudan on Sunday acknowledged the role of churches in the
country’s quest for independence.

The State Minister for information, Charles
Badiri Mayan recalled that churches under the auspices of the New Sudan Council
of Churches, contributed immensely to the process that led to the signing of the
Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005.

Hon. Badiri Mayan, who was speaking at an
event organized by the Sacred Heart Parish, Catholic Diocese of Rumbek, to mark
the 1st Anniversary of Independent South Sudan, singled out the
Catholic Church as having contributed greatly to the realization of the
country’s independence and human development.

He noted that the Catholic Church has
empowered a good number of individual South Sudanese, who are currently
involved in the development of the new nation from various capacities and
prayed to God to provide Church’s leadership with ample time and energy to
continue empowering the youth in South Sudan.

Meanwhile Charles Badiri Mayan said that it
is unfortunate that after a long struggle for independence and as the country
marks her first independence anniversary, some people are still plotting to
kill others.

The information Minister reminded the
congregation that the task of building the new nation calls for collective
responsibility, efforts, ideas and spirit of peace and reconciliation.

The colorful event was attended and addressed
by members of clergy from the neighboring Holy Family Parish as well as religious
leaders from other churches among other invited guests.
